CUHK-Shenzhen International Partnership Reaches New Heights in 2018

As of December, 2018, CUHK-Shenzhen has achieved various substantive cooperation with 87 world-class universities, reaching the record high. Nearly 1,000 undergraduate students of the University have studied abroad.

The new partners include: National University of Singapore (Singapore), Seoul National University (Korea), Pohang University of Science and Technology (Korea), Ewha Womans University (Korea), Chulalongkorn University (Thailand), University of Malaya (Malaysia), University of Melbourne (Australia), London School of Economics and Political Science (UK), University College London (UK), Carnegie Mellon University (USA), University of Southern California (USA) and University of South Carolina (USA).

 

     

 

Diversified Joint Programmes

CUHK-Shenzhen and the Gould School of Law, University of Southern California (USC) agree to carry out a “4+1” joint Bachelor's/ Master's programme open to undergraduates of the School of Humanities and Social Sciences (HSS), CUHK-Shenzhen. Eligible HSS students can apply for the Master of Studies of Law at the law school, and USC will give priority to admission to students nominated by CUHK-Shenzhen. All students nominated by CUHK-Shenzhen and admitted to the University of Southern California will receive scholarships ranging from $2,000 to $5,000 provided by the Gould Law School; those with exceptionally good results will receive a Dean Honorary Scholarship of at least $5,000 and a $5,000 grant for on-campus housing, in total at least $10,000 of scholarships.

 

CUHK-Shenzhen will start a “3+1+1” joint bachelor's/ master's programme or “3+1+N” joint bachelor's -doctoral programme with the National University of Singapore (NUS) in 2019. The five-year undergraduate-master programme is open to undergraduate students at CUHK-Shenzhen majoring in Statistics, New Energy Science and Engineering, Electronic Information Engineering, and Computer Science and Engineering. Students can apply for the programme after completing the first three years of study at CUHK-Shenzhen, and the selected students will continue to take the corresponding major courses at the National University of Singapore in the fourth year, when the earned credits can be transferred back to CUHK-Shenzhen. In the fifth year, students who meet the admission requirements can enter the corresponding master's programme at the National University of Singapore, such as Statistics, Business Analytics, Civil & Environmental Engineering, Electrical Engineering and Computer Science. Those who meet the graduation requirements will be awarded a bachelor's degree from The Chinese University of Hong Kong and a master's degree from the National University of Singapore. According to the agreement between the two universities, CUHK-Shenzhen Computer Science students with excellent academic performance will be directly enrolled in the Ph.D. programme of the Department of Computer Science, NUS after the fourth year.

 

According to the agreement between CUHK-Shenzhen and the Institute of Software Research (ISR) of the Carnegie Mellon School of Computer Science, the two universities will jointly train undergraduate and master students in a “4+1” model. Outstanding students from the School of Science and Engineering (SSE) can apply for the Master of Science in Information Technology-Software Engineering programme in the first semester of the senior year and qualified students will continue to study at ISR after graduating from CUHK-Shenzhen. CMU will give priority to applicants recommended by SSE, CUHK-Shenzhen, and reserve a certain number of admission places for CUHK-Shenzhen students. Currently, the programme has been open for class-of-2020 students from SSE. Office of Academic Links recommends that interested applicants can participate in software engineering-related projects and internships during the undergraduate programme, as a wealth of professional experience will help the application for the master's programme.

 

Following the Tripartite Global Business Management Programme with University of South Carolina (USC) and University of Auckland, CUHK-Shenzhen and USC reached a new "4+1" or "4+2” joint bachelor's / master's programme for science and engineering students. Both parties agree that all eligible SSE students can apply for a one-year or two-year master's programme in the College of Engineering and Computing, USC, including Computer Science and Engineering, Integrated Information Technology, Electrical Engineering, Biomedical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Entrepreneurial Engineering, Engineering Management etc. Students with exceptionally good conditions will be exempt from language and GRE scores.

 

CUHK-Shenzhen students at LSE

 

       Programmes Open to both Undergraduate and Postgraduate Students

During the 2019-2020 academic year, CUHK-Shenzhen will conduct student exchanges with the University of Melbourne, London School of Economics and Political Science, University College London, Seoul National University, Pohang University of Science and Technology, Ewha Womans University, Chulalongkorn University, and University of Malaya. Eligible undergraduate students from SME, SSE, HSS and the newly established School of Life and Health Sciences can apply and participate in the exchange programmes at the above institutions for a minimum of one semester in the third or fourth year. The exchange programmes of Ewha Womans University, Chulalongkorn University, Malaya University, and Pohang University of Science and Technology are open to our postgraduate students. Students applying for the exchange programme at the University College London can apply directly through UCL's official website while applicants to other programmes shall be nominated by CUHK-Shenzhen.

It has developed rapidly in more than 30 years and has become a world-class university dedicated to research and education in science and technology, being 83rd overall in the QS World University Rankings 2019. POSTECH ranks among the top 50 in the world in various subjects such as materials science, mechanical engineering, chemical engineering and electronic information engineering.

 

       Ewha Womans University

 

Ewha Womans University is a world-renowned private women's university in Seoul, South Korea founded in 1886. In the QS World University Rankings 2019, Ewha Womans University ranked 50th in Asia and 9th in Korea. Ewha Womans University has acquired AACSB (The Association to Advance Collegiate School of Business International) accreditation for both undergraduate and graduate programmes at Ewha School of Business, and established international partnerships with near 830 famous universities such as Harvard University, Peking University, Nanyang Technological University and Edinburgh University.

Chulalongkorn University, founded in 1917, is Thailand's oldest and one of the country's most prestigious universities. With world-class research and educational achievements, the national research university was ranked first in Thailand both in the QS World University Rankings 2019 and the 2018 World University Academic Rankings. 

 

 

University of Malaya

 

Founded in 1905, the University of Malaya is a public research university located in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia. It is an internationally renowned institution of higher learning in research and teaching with the longest history in the country. Ranked 87th in the 2019 QS World University Rankings, the university is among the top 50 across the globe for subjects such as electronic information engineering, social sciences, business and management.

 

       University of Melbourne

 

The University of Melbourne, founded in 1853, is a leading research university in the world. Melbourne is a sandstone university and a member of the Group of Eight, Universitas 21 and the Association of Pacific Rim Universities. The University has produced nine Nobel laureates and four Australian prime ministers. In 2019, Times Higher Education ranked Melbourne 32nd globally and 1st in Australia. According to QS World University Subject Rankings 2019, the university has 20 subjects ranked among the top 20 in the world, including social sciences, management, accounting, finance, life sciences, and computer science.

 

     The London School of Economics and Political Science

 

The London School of Economics and Political Science (LSE) is a prestigious world-class public research university in the UK. LSE is a member of the G5 Super Elite together with the University of Cambridge, University of Oxford, University College London and Imperial College London. It is also a member of the London University Alliance and the Russell Group, the British Ivy League. Founded in 1895, LSE enjoys a high reputation in social science, finance, political and business fields. Moreover, 18 Nobel Prize winners and 37 government leaders and heads of states have taught or studied at LSE. In 2019, LSE ranked 38th in the QS World University Rankings and among top 10 for subjects such as social science, politics, media, economics, finance, accounting and management in the globe.

 

     University College London

 

Founded in 1826, the University College London (UCL) is one of the best public research universities, ranking among the top 10 in the world. It is a founding member of the London University Alliance and also a member of the G5 Super Elite together with University of Cambridge, University of Oxford, Imperial College London and London School of Economics and Political Science. There have been 33 Nobel Prize laureates and 3 Fields Medal winners amongst UCL’s alumni and current and former staff. In the 2019 QS World University Rankings, UCL ranked 10th in the world and 4th in the UK.

 

      

Carnegie Mellon University

 

Founded in 1900, Carnegie Mellon University (CMU) is a world-renowned private research university in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, with the best computer and theatre colleges in the country. The College of Fine Arts, School of Business, College of Engineering and Heinz College of Information Systems and Public Policy of CMU also ranked top in the United States. Till October 2018, CMU has produced 20 Nobel laureates and 12 Turing Award winners amongst its professors and alumni. In the 2019 Times Higher Education World University Rankings, Carnegie Mellon University ranked 24th in the world and 6th in computer science subject.

 

A study by U.S. News and World Report released in 2018 declared Carnegie Mellon the best computer science college in the U.S. In addition, CMU also boasts six science and engineering master programmes, including statistics and electronic engineering, ranked in the top ten in the United States.

 

University of Southern California

 

The University of Southern California (USC) is a world-class American private research university in Los Angeles, California. Founded in 1880, it is the oldest private research university on the west coast of the United States. USC is a member of the American Association of Universities (AAU) and the Association of Pacific Rim Universities. The university ranks 22nd among all US universities, and its Gould School of Law was placed 19th among the best law schools by the US News and World Report. Currently, CMU has produced 5 Nobel Prize winners, 8 Rhodes Scholars, 5 MacArthur Fellows, 181 Fulbright Scholars, 1 Turing Award winner and other honorary faculty.

 

University of South Carolina

 

The University of South Carolina, founded in 1801, is a well-known public research university in the United States. It is one of the 32 public universities and the only two in South Carolina that earn the Carnegie Foundation’s top-tier designations in research activity. The University of South Carolina, ranked in 106th among all US universities, has nine top-25 graduate programmes in the nation, including international business and business administration, and 4 top-30 PhD programmes in the US, including electronic engineering, biological sciences, chemical engineering and mechanical engineering.
