The Chinese University of Hong Kong, Shenzhen held the Spring Reception for Media 2019 on March 15th, in which President Yangsheng Xu and the senior management team of the University shared ideas and happiness with over 60 friends from media.

 

 

The annual Spring Reception is to show gratitude to media for their sincere support and present the latest development of the University. Through student performances, interviews and Q&A session, the event provides a chance for the media to have a close interaction with the University Officers and know about the University.

 

As the event began, participants enjoyed fascinating performances brought by CUHK-Shenzhen students, including a folk music, an English song, and a Yue Opera. The talent show was a demonstration of the vitality of CUHK-Shenzhen students, and showcased the fusion of Chinese and Western cultures as well as the blending of ancient and modern cultures.

President XU then delivered a welcoming speech and talked about the latest development of the University: "CUHK-Shenzhen has been adhering to the educational philosophy and academic systems of The Chinese University of Hong Kong since its establishment in 2014. It is intended to evolve into a world-class research university with strong Chinese cultural influence. It is committed to nurturing high-end talent with global perspective, Chinese tradition and social responsibility."

 

In the interview, President XU specifically pointed out that: “The Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macau Greater Bay Area should have its own characteristics, which I think is an international environment with new innovation mechanisms sprouting. The University is building such an international platform within the Greater Bay Area to attract talents from all over the world. In this platform, people interact with and have influence on each other and thus bring about new inspirations, boosting the prosperity of science and technology within the area.

 

As for the University's 2019 undergraduate admissions, which is of great concern of the media, Professor Xu responded: "In 2019, CUHK-Shenzhen is expected to enroll 1,200 undergraduates in 26 provinces and autonomous regions, a slight increase from last year. The School of Humanities and Social Sciences will offer a new programme in Applied Psychology while the comprehensive evaluation admissions model will be newly applied in Fujian and Jiangsu province. By then, a total of six provincial regions (Guangdong, Zhejiang, Shanghai, Shandong, Fujian and Jiangsu) will implement the "dual track" enrollment model with comprehensive evaluation tests conducted in Shenzhen, Hangzhou, Shanghai and Qingdao. The new admission policy will soon be released in early April.”

Professor Tom Z.Q. LUO, Vice President of CUHK-Shenzhen, talked about the faculty and research highlights of the University in the interview: "As of the end of 2018, the University has introduced more than 280 world-class faculty, including 4 Nobel laureates, 2 Turing Award winners, 1 Fields Medal winner, and 30 national academicians. All of them have had teaching or research experience in top universities across the globe. In the past five years, CUHK-Shenzhen has gradually gathered world-class experts in the fields of robotics and artificial intelligence, big data and data science, future intelligent networks, bioinformatics, new materials and energy science, international finance and logistics, pharmaceuticals and precision medicine, etc. The University has built international platforms for tech innovation, and improved its discipline construction to cater to the needs of strategic emerging industries in the Pearl River Delta region, and at large the whole country. Currently, CUHK-Shenzhen has established several research platforms, including Arieh Warshel Institute of Computational Biology, Kobilka Institute of Innovative Drug Discovery, Ciechanover Institute of Precision and Regenerative Medicine, Hopcroft Institute for Advanced Study in Information Sciences, National-local joint Engineering Laboratory of Robot and Intelligent Manufacturing, Shenzhen Research Institute of Big Data, Shenzhen Finance Institute, Institute for Data and Decision Analytics, and Future Network of Intelligence Institute.

Professor Shiping ZHU, Vice President of CUHK-Shenzhen, announced the employment of the University's graduates. According to him, 70% of the second batch of bachelor's degree graduates are expected to continue their studies abroad, and they have received hundreds of offers from world-renowned universities such as Yale University, Massachusetts Institute of Technology, University of Chicago, Carnegie Mellon University, ETH Zurich, Cornell University, Johns Hopkins University, Columbia University, and University of California at Berkeley. Several SSE students have received over 30 full-scholarship offers of Ph.D. direct-entry programmes at world-class universities, including MIT, Carnegie Mellon University, ETH Zurich, University of Wisconsin and University of Michigan Ann Arbor.

 

Students expecting to work immediately after graduation have received more than 100 offers from globally renowned companies, including Huawei, Tencent, Microsoft, Baidu, JD, Coca-Cola, Procter & Gamble, L'Oreal, Unilever, Colgate, Tesla, Philips, PricewaterhouseCoopers, Deloitte, Ernst & Young, KPMG, Ping An, and CITIC Bank.

 

Vice President CAI highlighted the financial industry as the biggest feature of the Greater Bay Area. From his perspective, the booming financial industry has a great demand for high-end talents. In this regard, CUHK-Shenzhen provides a full range of related programmes in economics and finance from undergraduate to postgraduate level. The University is also preparing a finance-oriented EMBA programme to train high-level talents in financial management. In addition, the School of Management and Economics newly provided two Ph.D. Programmes (Economics / Finance) for students who aim to pursue a higher degree in these two areas.

 

At the same time, a series of Taught Postgraduate Programmes in multiple fields will be launched this year. They are: Master of Arts in Simultaneous Interpreting, Master of Arts in Translation & Interpreting Studies, Master of Arts in Global Studies, Master of Science in Accounting, Master of Science in Applied Psychology, Master of Science in Data Science, Master of Science in Economics, Master of Science in Finance, Master of Science in Financial Engineering, and MSc Programme in Supply Chain and Logistics Management. Besides, the University will also provide M.Phil.-Ph.D. Programmes in Biological Sciences, Materials Science and Engineering, Data Science, Economics, Finance, and Computer and Information Engineering.
